Metro Rod Bournemouth want to help you prepare for the effects of the autumn weather on your drains with some simple advice.
Every year autumn brings bad weather and storms which can pose some challenges for our drains. To help keep yours in top working order we wanted to give you some tips and advice on the things you should be looking out for. With the falling leaves and debris as well as heavy rain and chances of snow, our drains will be having to cope with a lot, so here’s what you can do to help.
Prevent Freeze Thawing
As the temperatures get colder over winter, your drains are more likely to freeze up, this means any water that is inside your drains and pipes will also freeze and then expand as ice does. If the ice expands too much it may end up cracking and fracturing the pipes. The problem is then when the ice begins to thaw out and turn back into a liquid, as the cracks that have been made will start to cause leaks.
You should consider having the heating on regularly to keep them from freezing as well as buying foam insulation for the pipes you can reach. Prevention is far better than waiting and having to react to a problem as this will most likely be harder and more costly.
Clear Drains Of Debris
To allow surface water to effectively drain away you need to keep your drains clear from any debris. Every week or so if you can pull any leaves that have gone into your drains out then you will significantly help reduce the risk of it becoming blocked. Alternatively, you can buy some drain guards which is prevent leaves and other debris from falling into your drains whilst still allowing water to go through. With drain guards you will have to clear them from time to time as otherwise the leaves will build up on top and still stop water from entering the drain. If you don’t do this then you may end up with very blocked drains due to all the debris that has made its way inside.
Gutter VACs
Aside from your drains you also should check your gutters are in good condition as you need them to drain the water away from your home’s roof. You want to make sure they are not blocked otherwise the water wont drain away, instead it will just sit in the gutters. If this happens they will eventually overflow or may even collapse under the weight. This could cause leaks and flooding into your home which can be very annoying to have to fix. This is why Metro Rod Bournemouth offer Gutter VACs, this is a service which will completely declutter your gutters. It is far safer than you trying to clean them yourself and getting up on a ladder. We have the equipment which allows the engineer to stay on the ground to clear them, whilst having a small camera attached to it so they can check they have cleared everything out from your gutters.
