LOOKING AFTER DRAINS IN COLD WEATHER – METRO ROD EDINBURGH

The icy winter weather is well underway and you’ll definitely be feeling the effects of it yourself, but do you know what it means for your drains?

Metro Rod Edinburgh are experts in drain care and we know that the cold weather can seriously damage your drainage system. When the water left in your drain pipes freezes over it will expand inside in the pipes. The expanding ice puts pressure within your drains and pipes causing them to crack and fracture. This is damaging to the overall structure as well as causing leaks when the ice starts to thaw out.

Here is some advice to help your drains cope with the cold weather to keep them fully functioning without problems this winter.

Keep the Drain Pipes Warm

One of the main problems with the cold is that you risk your pipes freezing up. We want to prevent this happening as much as possible so you don’t have to deal with leaking or burst pipes. To help prevent ice from forming inside and outside of your drains you should try and keep them as warm as possible. You might think keeping the heating on in your home or business will be costly, but keeping it on a low temperature regularly can be more efficient compared to ‘stop-start’ periods of heating.

Investing in insulation to wrap around the exterior of your pipes, can greatly decrease the likely hood of frozen pipes. You can find relatively cheap and effective insulation in most DIY shops, the circular foam tubing works well as you can just place it around the pipes. Heat tape is a second option that you might find works well.

Unblock Drains

Over autumn and winter leaves and debris will start falling off of trees and can make their way into your drains and gutters. The blockage can act as a dam, preventing any water from draining away. There is more chance that this water, as it is held in place, will freeze and then cause more problems damaging your drains.

Be Aware of Draughts

Small gaps around your home, especially in garages, can quickly cool down and freeze any high-risk pipes you may have. Plug these gaps as best as you can to help keep the warmth in your home or business to prevent unnecessary freezing.
