Drains are an integral part of any house and building so it’s important that we do our best to look after them and keep them flowing without problems.
We all rely on our drains to be fully functioning on a daily basis, and we know how annoying and stressful it can be when it breaks down. Whether you’ve got a blocked toilet or a clogged sink it can be really disruptive to your day, so here at Metro Rod Aberdeen we have decided to give you some top tips in drain care so that you can avoid unnecessary problems.
Remember to only flush the 3 Ps
It is important that we remember to only ever flush the 3 Ps - Poo, Pee and (toilet) Paper. Toilets are designed to flush these three things only and whilst you may be tempted to flush, cotton wool and wet wipes etc. they will actually block your toilet which could cause it to overflow the next time you try to flush.
Things like wet wipes, cotton wool, sanitary products and kitchen towel are all insoluble and therefore don’t dissolve and break down in water like toilet paper does. So while they look like they flush down the toilet, they can end up clinging to the scale in the pipes and attracting more debris which causes blockages.
The Water Research Centre has recently opened a testing facility so they can test the flushabilty of wet wipes, as brands were claiming they could be flushed when in fact they didn’t meet the WRC flushable criteria. The Centre puts the wipes under a range of tests to check whether they meet the criteria set out, and if they do they will be awarded the ‘Fine to Flush’ certification. If you see the ‘Fine to flush’ logo on wet wipes then they can be flushed, however it is probably always better to be safe and simply bin the wet wipes.
Washing food down the sink
After cooking and eating, people often rinse their plates and pans in the sink while there is still food on them. This is known to cause many blockages as the food can also stick to the walls of the pipes and drains, clogging them up. This is especially true for carbs like bread, pasta and rice which absorb water in your drainage system and then expand.
Similarly you should be washing fat, grease and oil down the sink, as they will solidify when cool creating big masses in your pipes called Fatbergs. As well as being an inconvenience through blocking your drains these blockages can also start to smell.
It is always best to scrape any food into the bin, and allow fat, grease and oil to cool and solidly first and then throw it in the bin.
