A soil stack or sometimes called a soil vent pipe is the main vertical waste pipe on the outside of a house or other building. The soil stack transports all of the waste, sewage and greywater from the house or building to another underground soil pipe which joins the main subterranean (below ground) sewerage system for the area.

Essentially the soil stack removes all the waste from your toilets, sinks, baths and shower from your house or building into the main sewer whilst also using its vent to both draw in air to speed up the removal and release any smells out too.

A soil pipe is a horizontal, typically PVC-U pipe, that takes sewage and wastewater consistently from every toilet, sink, bath and bidet in a house or other building to the main vertical soil stack. This soil stack pipe is a long vertical pipe sitting along the full length of a building that transports waste underground to connect to the main sewage system.

Soil stack and waste stack are sometimes terms which are used interchangeably to describe the main pipe on the outside of a building which transports waste to the subterranean (below ground) sewage system. However, they are different parts of a drainage system.

A soil stack is the main vertical pipe described above, which transports waste and wastewater from the soil pipes to the sewage system. On the other hand waste stack is any other type of vertical piping in a house or building which carries wastewater except for sewage from a toilet or other sanitary fitting.

Soil stacks are typically wider than other waste pipes and this is due to them needing to carry some solid material along with non-solid material. Soil stacks are usually 110mm in diameter which is significantly bigger than waste pipes, as they tend to be between 21.5mm and 40mm in diameter.
